Our Leading Record of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Number One Place.

Initially, this album may look more like an arduous academic challenge than a new popular music record by an artist whose last single featured a global pop star. Split across 4 different movements and performed in 13 tongues, it is a dizzying classical-tinged album that delves into female mystery, religious ascent, and physical change, frequently by way of the lens of various women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme handled with raw openness elsewhere—soars skyward on this record, carried by the constant sound of a major orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter among an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer daring alone makes the work of contemporary pop stars appear rather small.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux succeeds in transcend dry intellectual chin-stroking feels almost a miracle, and full praise belonging to the artist. Although it's not her first project to blend the past with the present, its stakes feel far greater here, and the balancing act far more pronounced. What truly elevates this fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, rich compositions, and engrained drama, is a core sense of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk at her height, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. When she is tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless desire to be alongside her for the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That exuberant energy shines clearly during a stunning Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over several minutes. Suddenly, everything drops away, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment before a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes down with cartoonish force. The track then segues into the frenetic single driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic with this album lies in the listener rarely exactly understand—nor want to know—what you will go next."

Nearly each track concludes at a totally different place than where it began. One moment examines the transient nature of celebrity with a featherlight symphony only to collapsing in electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's earlier trap-infused style begins off dark and sinister, with menacing vocals, until sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to smooth its rough corners.

The Bridge Between Art and Pop

Another crucial balancing act on Lux involves navigating the gap of radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is no surprise that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of utterly catchy hits. One track performed primarily in the English language swells on a chorus that seems to gather more and more nagging hooks while it spins skyward. This trick gets repeated on a different expansive ballad that expands and contracts, intertwining layered melodies like an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused number charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture honesty of other heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the singing carry a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a grand scale, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism for sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of buried treasure that requires time to fully mine but doesn't seem like a chore. While other big releases of the year felt like a meager scraps, this record offers a sumptuous feast at which the characters around it, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flit from discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and common stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from pop's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
