Government Official Confirms Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Personnel Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible threats associated with Chinese-made cars, while staff have been advised to avoid talking about secret matters in all vehicles.

Security Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified material while riding in China-made vehicles.

He said that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a issue in all contemporary cars.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any car, because of the increasing threats of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Security Background

The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

The wider defence environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in every aspects of government activities, from vehicle use to communication practices.
