The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
