At least 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
